Synæsthesia

I visited the D-Day beaches in Normandy, France shortly before the 2024 U.S. Presidential election. Over the course of 3 days, I photographed Sword, Juno, Gold, Omaha, and Utah beaches along with the incredibly well-preserved German gun emplacements at Longues-sur-Mer.

For Americans who visit the D-Day beaches, Omaha is the main objective because Omaha Beach was the primary landing zone for the U.S. troops.

It is hard to imagine what the Allied Forces were facing when they landed at Normandy. Only when you stand on the cliffs overlooking these beaches in person can you begin to understand the audacity of the invasion and the bravery of the soldiers who took part. German guns and fortifications were everwhere. While much has been lost to time, the quantity and variety of what remains 80 years later is impressive.

Anticipating a possible invasion, the German military placed booby traps and obstacles all along the beach. Eighty years of crashing surf has not destroyed these wooden obstacles.
